Hello beautiful church,

Well, here we go.

Stewardship Month.

I know. Nothing gets people racing to church on Sunday morning quite like hearing that the pastor is going to talk about money!

But here's the thing.

I don't really want to begin with money.

I want to begin with memory.

This Sunday, we're going to encounter Moses standing with Israel on the edge of something new. They are preparing to cross the Jordan and enter the land they have spent generations imagining.

And of all the things Moses could be worried about at this particular moment, one of his greatest concerns is this:

What if they forget?

His solution is pretty intense.

Teach these words to your children. Talk about them at home. Talk about them when you're away. Talk about them when you go to bed and when you wake up. Tie them to your body. Put them on your doorposts.

Basically: whatever you do, don't forget.

And then Moses imagines a moment sometime in the future:

When your children ask…

I keep coming back to those words.

Because every community eventually has to answer that question.

When the generations after us ask why this mattered, what will we tell them?

Why did you build this?

Why did you keep showing up?

Why did you give?

Why did you believe this was worth carrying forward?

And perhaps even more importantly:

What will we have built that helps answer the question for us?

This Sunday we begin our Stewardship series, For Generations to Come, and we're going to think together about memory, inheritance, possibility, and what it means to receive a story that was already being told long before we arrived.

And then we'll ask what happens when, for a little while, that story becomes ours.
